Beat the Heat Summertime Slushie

The first thing I noticed when we got back in town last week was the heat. It was sweltering, sticky, and an instant sweat-maker.

To beat the heat, I did what any reasonable person would do – I headed to hot yoga…

Ok, not the most reasonable, but I had the weekend off from teaching hot yoga, so I decided to kick-off my post vacation healthy habits by sweating out some of my indulgences and lack of movement. And the heat made it feel like at least I was sweating for a purpose 😉

To beat the heat this week, I have been using a few of my ultra-cooling summertime buddies – watermelon, cucumber, and coconut water.

In Ayurveda, these are all part of the cooling, summertime family, which means they will keep you hydrated, calm, and cool even in the hottest of heat. Watermelon and cucumber as both water dense, so they hydrate you before or after a sweaty session (aka trip to the car). Watermelon also contains the amino acid, L-citrulline, which helps to repair and prevent soreness post workout.  Coconut water has extra special hydrating qualities, because it naturally contains electrolytes, making it “Nature’s Gatorade” – minus the chemicals, added sugar, and food dyes. Add them together and you get one heck of a summertime drink!

Beat the Heat Summertime Slushie:

Makes 1-2 large drinks. You’ll need a blender and a juicer (or a mesh strainer) for today’s recipe.
1 cup frozen watermelon
1 apple
1 cucumber
1 lime
1-2 inch ginger root
1/2 to 1 cup coconut water (depending on the consistency you like)
In a juicer, add lime, ginger, apple, and cucumber. If you don’t have a juicer, add these to a blender with some water and then strain. Add your frozen watermelon and juice to your blender and blend until smooth. Add your coconut water to thin it to the consistency you’d like and then blend again until smooth. Take a seat in the sunshine and sip your new summertime favorite!
