The Truth About Change

changes

Change can be a beautiful, life-fulfilling, energizing thing. In fact, it might be exactly what you are looking for and need in your life. Change can be the thing that ignites a spark in you, finally gets you to reach those goals, and allows you life to soar to places higher than you ever thought possible.

But change can also be a scary thing. It can fill you with uncertainty, be uncomfortable, and make you run screaming back to the comfort of where you left off.

And yet, this discomfort, this nervousness, this butterfly-in-your-belly, this vibration is exactly what is needed to make change happen. [Tweet “Change is what gets you off automatic pilot and wakes you back up ~@househealthy”]

This is something I talk about frequently in my barre and Pilates classes. The moves we do are sometimes very small, but he intensity is big. So big, that your body starts shaking and your legs quiver. This is the place where you usually rest and back out, because that shake must mean you are tired and need a break.
But truthfully, this shaking means you are making changes.
This is the regular stuff getting tired and the new muscles, cells, and tissues firing up to move you through.
This is change.
And it often happens throughout life.

How many times have you been on the track to making changes – finally getting healthy, ditching your lackluster career, or moving on from a bad romance, when change hits, you get that nervous feeling, and you go back to the same old same old? If you are honest, it has probably happened more often than not.

I watched a video today with Todd Herman and Marie Forleo who explain this in great detail. He also explains how it’s our brains that tell us “yay” or “nay” when we are on the path to change. The reason is resistance – the same reason your muscle shake during your Barre  workout. That resistance can make you feel awesome and accomplished, or scared and defeated.

A scared brain will feel stuck, bored, and look for safety. A scared brain wants to stop the change and go back to what was comfortable.

An exhilarated brain finds growth, confidence, and adventure with the change.

So which do you want to be?

Scared or Exhilarated?

Bored or adventurous?

Stuck or in the midst of growth?

Searching for safety or confident and calm?

Me? I’ll take the second part any day.

Here are some tips to help you get through change, no matter what kind:

1) When you feel stuck and like you’ve hit a wall, look back on the changes you have made already. It can be easy to overlook how far we have come and only look at how much we still have to go. Change takes time and it is the time that makes it stick. So remember how much you have already done and embrace it.
2) When you feel bored or checked out, change your perspective. Instead of resisting and saying “this is so lame”, find a sense of adventure. Go bigger. Laugh at yourself. Get out of your comfort zone and you’ll find more than you ever knew was there waiting for you.
3) When you feel insecure and need a safety net, find your inner courage. Tell yourself you can do anything that you put your mind to. Look back and see all the amazing things you have done so far on your journey and fill yourself up with the confidence you need to carry on.

Change can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be! Let go of the resistance and embrace it. Make your change a beautiful, lasting piece of your journey.
