5 Steps to break Through Old Habits

We all have them. The habits that we reach towards time and time again when things start to get a little out of our control.

I decided recently to get a hair cut. Nothing crazy, just a little trim. A few inches off or so. And I decided to do this on a whim. Very spontaneously, I made a decision, announced it to my husband, booked an appointment and prepared to get it cut the next day. And then I started thinking about getting it a little shorter. Maybe have them do something a little different. And then I though – what the heck am I doing?! Without putting much time or thought into it, I had almost completely changed my appearance through my hair. Sounds silly right? No big deal right?
Well, for me this is an old habit, my go-to habit for when I need to regain control of something. If I look back at middle school through high school and even into college, my hair was constantly changing. And why? Stress. If I changed the boy I had a crush on, had a break-up, got into and argument, moved, felt insecure, didn’t have friends, boom, I would change my hair. Cut it, color it, restyle it, add some bangs or layers, start wearing it curly or straightening it. It was my way of gaining control – without even realizing it.  And then after a day or two I would remember that I really wanted long hair, in my own color.

E-V-E-R-Y-T-I-M-E.

And then one day, I made it my goal to go 8 months, during the most heartbreaking, stressed out, lonely period in my life, without touching my hair. No dye, no cut, not even a simple trim. And in doing this, I found other ways to deal with control issues. Some healthy, some not. But I was learning and becoming more comfortable with being me and dealing with my insecurities.

You may have some of these too. Do you shop til you drop when stresses? Restrict your food? Binge eat? Exercise until you can’t move? Cry? Change your style or appearance?

We all have a habit we move towards, so today I have a video  to help you recognize and break through these habits in 5 easy steps.

Have a comment or question? What have been your biggest control habits? Where do you need a breakthrough, or where have you found one? Leave a comment below the video or on the page here.
